Insurance & Medicaid Coverage for Autism Services
At SPARKS, we are committed to helping families access the autism therapy their child needs. Understanding your insurance and Medicaid options is the first step in making sure your child receives the best possible care.
State Coverage
Every State Has Autism Services
In Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., state laws require health insurance plans to cover autism services for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This includes coverage for applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.
- Maryland: The Autism Insurance Mandate requires all commercial health insurance plans to cover autism services for children under age 21. Coverage includes ABA therapy, speech therapy, and other related services.
- Virginia: Virginia’s Autism Insurance Mandate provides similar coverage for children with autism, including ABA therapy, through most health insurance plans.
- Washington, D.C.: A similar law requires health insurance to cover ABA therapy and other autism services for children under age 21.
If your child has private insurance, SPARKS can help you verify your benefits and determine what autism services are covered under your plan.

Medicaid
Medicaid is a vital resource for families who may not have access to private insurance. Each state offers Medicaid programs that cover ABA therapy and other autism-related services:
- Maryland Medicaid: Medicaid covers ABA therapy under the Children with Autism Waiver (CWA) and the EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment) benefit for children under age 21.
- Virginia Medicaid: Virginia’s Medicaid program provides ABA therapy through the EPSDT benefit and the Virginia Autism Waiver.
- D.C. Medicaid: Medicaid in D.C. covers ABA therapy under the EPSDT benefit and through the Developmental Disabilities Waiver for children with more intensive needs.
SPARKS works closely with families to navigate Medicaid eligibility and help apply for the programs that cover ABA therapy and other services.
